This film had a weak plot and sometimes cliche jokes, and for the love of god do all these high school films have to end at a prom, but this movie a joy to watch with funny characters and really good acting, I enjoyed this film a lot. 10 Things I Hate About You is the rare movie that successfully modernizes Shakespeare, and despite feeling a little predictable it's still an above-average romantic comedy.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Cameron, a new student at Padua high school who falls for sophomore Bianca Stratford . However, Bianca's father won't let her date anybody until her beautiful but bitter older sister Kat has a boyfriend as well. Cameron decides to pay the equally cold Patrick to ask Kat out so that Cameron can in turn date Bianca. The story is based off of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, but with completely modernized dialogue. The lack of Shakespearean dialogue is a welcome touch, as it makes the movie far more comprehensible and charming than other modernized Shakespeare adaptations (coughROMEO+JULIETcough). Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles are both fantastic in the roles that elevated them to stardom, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is good as well despite being overshadowed a little by Ledger and Stiles.

It can be a little predictable at times, but 10 Things I Hate About You has enough poignant moments, humor, and great acting to make it a memorable and very enjoyable romantic comedy. When the revised rule is imposed, Cameron and his friend Michael devise a plan to get resident douchecanoe Joey to pay for Australian bad boy to take Kat out on dates. Against her better judgment, Kat begins to fall for Patrick. And Patrick begins to fall for her but can't really let her know about the whole 'being paid to date her' thing. Drama ensues, but everyone ends up with the right person in the end, huzzah. The film's director Gil Junger made a recent claim that Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt dated during the making of the 1999 romance.

A touch raunchier than these things usually are, with some very fine bits by some of the teachers . There really are few film genres more antithetical to the potentially feminist implications and complications of Shakespeare's play than the teen high school comedy, but this still strikes some sparks.

Casting Julia Stiles in the Kate part as a northwestern riot grrrls fan and budding feminista is a nice touch. And of course there are pleasures to be derived from early screen appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger . The links to Shakespeare rather quickly break down however—it's nigh impossible to imagine the newlywed husbands' contest to see which wife most promptly obeys her lord and master. Most of this is lighter than air and about as memorable as any teen flick—if you're not in the demographic when it comes out, you probably won't need to own the dvd. Nevertheless, there are one or two solid moments of acting—Stiles gets a very good speech near the end of this and David Krumholtz (as JG-L's comic sidekick) is given consistently good lines as well. And, as befits the case with any candidate for teen movie of a generation, this has a solid soundtrack—although, interestingly, many of the songs are covers of older songs by newer groups like Letters To Cleo.

As far as teen romantic comedies go, this was one of the better ones for its era. We have plenty of stereotypical characters like you'd see in any teen movie. Heath Ledger is the criminal type, Julia Stiles is the loud mouth feminist, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the new shy quiet guy who was a crush on Larisa Oleynik, the pretty princess type. Even though we know this will have a happy ending, the writing and acting are strong enough to keep us interested along the way. 10 Things was her first major movie role, but Pratt quickly became a familiar face in teen dramas, playing pals of the protagonists in Drive Me Crazy and Center Stage. She was so recognized for those roles that it's easy to forget that after 2000, she had mostly guest spots on various shows, including Charmed, Private Practice, Franklin & Bash and Masters of Sex.

She had spurts of acting gigs in 2012, 2015 and 2017, but was last seen in the 2008 short, The Girl on the Roof, and has one film, Act Super Naturally, in post-production. Miller was already a well-established comedy actor when he landed the role of the hilariously over-protective, teen pregnancy-fearing father of Kat and Bianca. Of his numerous subsequent film and TV appearances, he is perhaps best known for his turn as Princess Mia's brash stylist Paolo in The Princess Diaries and the sequel. If it disappoints, I think "why couldn't you have been cute and clever like 10 Things?" If it's good I think "you exist because of 10 Things." Maybe that's unfair.
